The Primera División (First Division) of the Liga Nacional de Fútbol Profesional (LFP), commonly known as La Liga (The League) or, for sponsorship reasons, Liga BBVA (BBVA League) since 2008, is the top professional association football division of the Spanish football league system. It is contested by twenty teams, with the three lowest placed teams relegated to the Segunda División and replaced by the top three teams in that division. A total of 59 teams have competed in La Liga, nine of which have been crowned champions. Since the 1950s, Real Madrid and Barcelona have dominated the championship. The former have won the title thirty-one times while the latter have won it on twenty-one occasions. However, during the 1930s and 1940s and in the last two decades, La Liga has seen other champions including Atlético Madrid, Athletic Bilbao, Valencia, Real Sociedad, Deportivo, Real Betis and Sevilla . Barcelona have currently won the last three seasons of La Liga.

La Liga is currently ranked the best football league in the world according to the IFFHS and the second strongest league in Europe according to UEFA's league coefficient, based on recent European performances. La Liga is one of the most popular professional sports leagues in the world, with an average attendance of 29,124 for league matches in the 2008--09 season. This is the eighth highest of any domestic professional sports league in the world and the third highest of any professional association football league.


La Liga BBVA, la mejor liga del mundo. Si la Liga BBVA 2009/2010 estuvo marcada por el duelo entre los dos mejores jugadores del mundo, Messi y Cristiano Ronaldo, la temporada que va a dar comienzo seguramente va a estar protagonizada por los técnicos tanto del Real Madrid como del FC Barcelona. José Mourinho aterriza como mega estrella y nuevo "salvador" en el proyecto del Real Madrid con la imperiosa necesidad de conseguir títulos tras la hegemonía culé de las dos últimas temporadas.
El FC Barcelona espera continuar la satisfactoria línea de los dos últimos anos bajo la batuta de Josep Guardiola, con Sandro Rosell como nuevo presidente y con David Villa como el fichaje más sonado del verano.
Valencia y Sevilla se han reforzado lo suficiente como para intentar dar la vuelta a la tortilla y hacer frente a los dos grandes del fútbol espanol en lo alto de la tabla.
Atlético de Madrid, Villarreal, Deportivo y Athletic arrancan con el objetivo de luchar por las plazas europeas y por qué no pelear por uno de los puestos que dan acceso a jugar la UEFA Champions League la próxima temporada.
Real Sociedad, Levante y Hércules regresan a la máxima categoría con más ilusión que nunca y con la intención de hacer un buen papel y permanecer muchos anos en Primera División. No se puede pedir más.

@stopislam77 European league isnt special value. Barcelona won CHL because the refree helped them(ovrebo ,stark,). Last trusthworthy wining champions league for spanish team was in 2002.
