The flood situation in Perlis worsened this morning with the number of evacuees rising to more than 3,000 compared with about 1,600 last night.
A spokesman from the Flood Operations Room of the Perlis Welfare Department said the victims were being accommodated in 23 relief centres.
Operations to trace victims who needed to be evacuated were still being carried out in all the affected areas.
Last night, Perlis Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Dr Md Isa Sabu visited the victims in several areas while former menteri besar Datuk Seri Dr Shahidan Kassim braved the flood waters to visit victims in the Tambun Tulang area.
The Perlis Education Department ordered 11 schools to be closed today due to the floods.
State Education Director Mansor Lat said the directive was only effective today and a new directive would be issued if there was a need to close the schools until tomorrow.
A check by Bernama showed that several roads in Kangar were inundated as well as several public buildings including the Hospital Tuanku Fauziah (HTF) which were flooded.
Residents in Taman Bukit Kayangan, near here were also scrambling to save their belongings since the water level rose last night.
Many residents in housing estates on the suburbs of Kangar had moved out because of the rising water level.
In Padang Terap, Kedah, 9,264 residents from 2,214 families in several areas in Kedah were evacuated.
The families were from the districts of Padang Terap, Kubang Pasu, Kota Setar and Pokok Sena.
A spokesman from the Padang Terap Flood Operations Room, Khalijah Latif said that as of 10am today, all the victims were being accommodated in 39 relief centres opened up since early yesterday morning.
"Among the affected villages are Mani A, Mani B, Mani C, Tanjung, Labi, Kuala Janing, Felcra Belimbing Tualak, Bendang Raja and Padang Sanai," she said.
Khalijah said the water levels of three rivers in the district had surpassed the danger level with Sungai Kuala Nerang rising to 21.08 metres compared with the danger level of 17.07 metres, Sungai Kubu at 15.13m (danger level 13.02m) and Sungai Naka at 34.21m (danger level 33m), while the Sungai Padang Sanai was at the alert level of 34.21m (danger alevel 36m).
A check by Bernama found that the main road from Kuala Nerang to Padang Terap was closed together with several other roads due to the floods.
A spokesman for the Pokok Sena Flood Operations Room, Noor Nazila Hassaim said seven villages were inundated including Kampung Bukit, Kampung Baru, Kampung Derang and Kampung Bukit Hijau.
"Four evacuation centres that were opened up are at Sekolah Kebangsaan Bukit Hijau, Surau Seberang Paya, Dewan Kampung Empa and Surau Permatang Limau," she said.
A statement issued by the Kota Setar Flood Operations Room said 11 villages had been inundated and all the affected residents were evacuated to six relief centres in the district.
The water level in all rivers in the Kota Setar district had exceeded the danger level and the water level could rise further.
A spokesman of the Kubang Pasu Flood Operations Room, Fadzin Long said 23 relief centres had been set up while 11 centres comprising houses of worship were also opened.
