Edited version of the ZDFmediatek interview with David Foster Wallace, 2003. This version offers David Foster Wallace's ideas, without repetitions, long pauses, interviewer's comments. Although some cuts may appear rough, there is no attempt at editorial bias or content manipulation. Mr. Wallace's archives (books in his library, notes, and writings) have been recently acquired by the Harry Ransom Center at the University of Texas Austin.

  • Oh, so he's really cute and sweet in addition to being brilliant? Cool. That's nice. Not breaking my heart or anything.

  • It's so funny to see one of the most brilliant authors of his generation make fart noises with his hands. He does it at 2:10

  • I love when the cameraman says he "just shoots the pictures", and DFW goes, "Yeah."

  • In these "outtakes" we see a more authentic, and "twitchy", author as he is being harassed somewhat by the filmmakers.

This is _cinema verite_, film truth "24 times per second", a viewing of process prior to constructed product, as opposed to the to the more professional result of relatively greater editing in the traditional 'documentary'.

  • i laughed at the horror on his face on owning up "i said the word existential loneliness?"

  • he hated being interviewed and these people seemed to want him to behave like Tommy Lee or some kind of rock star; it's obvious they were trying his patience with their coaching and comments about how he was responding in this way or that way!

for me, any chance to see the master in any form or forum is a blessing!

  • I love DFW. There will never be another literary great like him....

  • @CaptainPancakes It could be worse. James Joyce, one of the greatest writers of the 20th century wrote the fart letters, after all.

  • One of the nicest most sincere men who lived on this earth. I hope he is getting a better deal where he is now ,than this shithole.

  • I grew intensely angry listening to these people in the background. It is a testament to what a gracious man he was that he didn't unleash that savage intellect on them.
