Actually, preacher, no. Most police officers have shotguns, and assault rifles in their police cars.
You never hear of people breaking the law using assault rifles because they are incredibly hard to get. You have to pass a background check, and go through a buttload of paperwork.
@TheMroberts88- No you don't... You can buy an assault weapon simply by going to the store and buying it. It's the same as buying a rifle. All you have to do is pay for it, and do some paperwork saying you won't use it in the matter it's not intended to be used, etc, etc. When you buy a handgun, you have to do a little paperwork, and there is a waiting period. Assault rifles and long rifles, shotguns, have NO waiting period. They aren't hard to get at all. They sell them everywhere that I live.
also, how often do you hear of a crime being committed with an assault weapon? even before the assault weapons ban in 1994? nearly all gun related crime is committed with handguns. but it still makes no sense to tighten the grip on people that haven't broken the law like you or me. i mean it's like any other big debate. gay marriage for example. i'm not gay but i wont crush the rights of other people who are. you should act the same toward gun owners.
and "assault weapon" is a loose term. it can be alot of things. it can be a handgun with a magazine capacity of over 10 rounds. such as a glock 17, which is a common police issue handgun. assault weapons is typically thought of as assault rifles and hardly any crime is or was ever committed with assault rifles. more crime is committed with cars and or computers than is with assault rifles. someday you are going to need a gun and you wont care until you need one.
"To a police officer they aren't any more dangerous than any other semi auto rifle. "
Suppose an upstanding "law-abiding gun owner" goes on a rampage with a semi-automatic rifle that he bought at a local sporting goods store. Wouldn't the police rather have a shooter with a handgun than a semi-automatic rifle? Since a regular police officer only has a handgun themselves, I'm guessing they'd rather not face an assault rifle. I know rampages don't happen that frequently. Just a thought.

Maybe. Might depend on where you live.

Exactly. That's why I buy mine from the ice cream man. It's much more expedient.
