Review: Manic Panic Hair Dye

***I've had a lot of people ask me "Do you think -insert Manic Panic color here- will work over my un-bleached dark brown or black hair. The answer is no, it probably won't. Think about it this way. If you have a black piece of paper and try to write over it with a navy blue marker - are you going to see it? Probably not, but it would be easily seen over a lighter background. That's why bleaching (unfortunately) is a necessity to make these colors work if you have darker hair. You can try it anyway but the effect will probably be almost unnoticeable.

If you have lighter hair like light blond, strawberry blond, medium blond, light to medium brown hair etc - how well the dye turns out depends on how light your hair is and how dark the dye is. Just understand that the little color hair swatch you see in the store when you buy your dye is dyed over hair that has been 100% stripped of color. So you might get a nice bright color but it may not look exactly like the hair swatch you saw in the store if you dye over your hairs natural color. And Manic Panic makes dyes like Virgin Snow or Cotton Candy Pink that are so light they may not show up even over blond or medium blond hair because the hair is still too dark for those colors to be visible.

I might be mistaken on some of these colors because most of them we've used a long time ago & Manic Panic has a lot of dyes that look similar to each other but I'm pretty sure we've tried the following:
After Midnight Blue (Lasts only a few washes)
Atomic Turquoise (Didn't survive one wash on me maybe good for more than 1 wash on others)
Cotton Candy Pink (Lasts for a few washings but not too vivid of a color)
Electric Banana (Lasts a few weeks)
Electric Lava (Last's a few weeks. Stains a little if I remember correctly)
Electric Lizard (True color lasts for a week or so but stains a nasty swamp green color)
Flaming or Pillarbox Red (Can't remember which we used they look alike - Lasts a week or 2 then fades to a nice shade of pink/peach)
Purple Haze (Lasts a couple weeks but then fades fast)
Shocking Blue (Takes a couple dye sessions for color to hold. Washes out after 1 or 2 washings)
Ultra Violet (Lasts a week or 2 then fades fast)
Hot Hot Pink (Good color lasts for about 1 or 2 weeks then fades to a redish/pink color for another 2 or 3 weeks then washes out completely)
Flashlighting Bleach kit: May take 2 bleach sessions for very very dark hair. Works well but will damage - all bleach is damaging so that's to be expected.

Additional Notes because it's hard to remember everything I need to say while filming:

The regular formula costs around $12 a jar & the amplified around $15. You can get this from the Manic Panic website, some Hot Topics, Amazon, & Sally's Beauty Supply.

As with all hair dyes you need to use Shampoo & Conditioner for Color Treated Hair. Regular shampoo will wash these colors out way too fast.

I've only tried Hot Hot Pink in the new Amplified formula -- still not done testing it though I'll update this when I have an opinion on it.

I wash my hair every day (uber oily scalp) and Dickie washes his every day or every other day so these colors might last longer on people who wash their hair less often.

I have a similar hair color to you (light brown) and I want to dye the underside of my hair a redish-burgundy color, nothing too bright. Are there any manic panic reds that would come out like that? I definitely want it to be temporary (since you said the dye is temporary), so my hair will go back to normal after a while

*Tip- Leave the Manic Panic in your hair overnight. You know it's ready to wash out when you slick your fingers down your hair and the dye comes off clear. Garbage bags or shower caps for the win!

I bleached and dyed my hair the ultra violet manic panic, and it faded to a blue, now its kind of a gross green. I really wanna dye it another color but i will not bleach it again because i dont want to kill my hair anymore. Can i dye over my hair another manic panic color so this awful green color will be gone or will the green still show or change the color of the new dye? If so, what colors do you think would work best?
