Test video using Panasonic TZ7 compact camera using AVCHD lite 1280x 720 at 50fps Dolby Digital stereo audio without wind reduction option.
When played on a tv with hdmi, it is really good and is noticeably better than even the HD on You Tube. The quality seems better than full size ordinary standard definition camcorders and seems as good as many recent HD camcorders. The 720p HD is very clear with vibrant and natural colours. The Dolby Digital stereo audio is also extremely good for such a small camera. It has clear natural sounding audio and the microphone is very sensitive as well as a good auto sound level control. The zoom control is also uniquely advanced and affective for a digital still camera. It is small for a 12x zoom compact camera. The autofocus is well tested here as filming through very close wire mesh that could easily fool autofocus systems, but the TZ7 handles it very impressively.
The picture quality using HDMI from the camera, an SD card played directly on tv or player or a copy recorded onto disc, onto a large screen tv is noticeably better than the uploaded quality even in HD on You Tube. The quality seems remarkable for what is primarily a compact still camera. It seems possibly better than many full size camcorders of even a few years ago and exceeds in detail current non HD camcorders. As regards comparing with HD camcorders of course its 720p so technically isnt as good as full size 1080i HD camcorders, but it is still excellent for its size, which has advantages in being able to take the camera with you at all times, whereas taking a camcorder may be cumbersome even the smallest ones and youve got an excellent still camera of course in the one. Still camera facilities are excellent for an automatic with lots of options and modes offering excellent results with a good quality zoom lens.
Even though not the smallest of current compacts, its about the size of the smallest from a couple of years ago and for a 12x zoom it is probably one of the smallest currently available and is pocket sized, in fact a nice size to use as smaller ones still can be a bit small to hold properly and the shape enables a good grip when taking pictures. Also even at full zoom it doesnt project out to far forwards so looks like using a standard compact at full zoom, but at 35mm film camera equivalent of 300mm is a long telephoto and it goes to a very wide 25mm 35mm equivalent. Colour of both still and video appears rich, with good colour control with several options available and is well defined, with good sharpness. This test recording was made using multi subject autofocus, in a situation that can easily fooled, as the wire mesh at the zoo was quite fine and when close to camera, it did very well considering, at locking in on the subjects.
