Abraham Lincoln's political views are most comparable in relation to modern ideology to progressivism and American liberalism. He didn't identify with the progressive movement, but he was far more similar to what we know as progressivism than to conservatism. His and the views of other abolitionists are difficult to categorize, but the people fighting to keep slavery were very clearly conservative.

The liberal/conservative argument is a false divide. It is the people versus corporations that should be focused on. Corporations have sent our jobs to 3rd world dictatorships to pay a fraction of what they could pay in the US. They buy our elections by spending billions of dollars every year lobbying government to enact legislation favorable to their interests. Now we're in two wars, a deep recession with continuing job losses and trillions of dollars spent to bailout Wall Street.
