"30 Days Disabled" (Act 1 of 2)

Jacquie Detterbeck -Director
Xinh Pham -Assistant Director
Jim Goodrow -Cinematographer
Dan Nguyen -Cinematographer
Shawna Mongiat -Tech Guru/Narrator
Year: 2004

This student-made documentary film examines what it would be like to live in a wheelchair for 30 Days. The filmmakers state: Our inspiration for this project comes from Morgan Spurlock, the mastermind behind "SuperSize Me." Spurlock now has his own sitcom called "30 Days" on FX where people live the life or lifestyle of another to gain an understanding of what it is like to "live 30 days in someone else's shoes."

The two students who shared the challenge to live in a wheelchair for 30 days at MSU were: Jacquie Detterbeck and James Goodrow.

The student team states:
"*Our Project: Film a documentary about living a life completely different from your own in some way, and in a way that proves an intellectual challenge, for 30 days.
*Our Thesis: Since the passage of the Americans With Disabilities Act of 1990, those with disabilities still face many challenges, many of which are unnecessary.
*Our Film: Two of our group members (Jacquie and Jim) will be "living the life of a person confined to a wheelchair" for two weeks each, making a combined total of 30 days. It is our hope that this film will illustrate to the public those challenges faced by the disabled--an issue that is often ignored."

This film was created as part of a senior thesis research project in a course at Michigan State University. Learn more here: http://www.msu.edu/course/lbs/492/luckie

  • Why no asking for help? Asking people for help is a big part of my life as an disabled person. Actually asking strangers for help is one the most difficult things about being disabled.

  • no, not bull. my experience and certainly a qualified opinion. the way i choose to live my life and focus on what matters more than what doesn't. disabled life has no less balance than able bodied life. just depends how much you buy into the poor me attitude. just because someone's experience or opinion is not the same as yours is no reason to simply brush it off. if ppl wish to tip the balance with negative portrayals then so be it. my life, while not perfect is very rewarding.

  • I think this needs to be on a movie or the t.v cause it is just like what happened to a freind!!!!!!!!!!

  • I wish that all 3000+ students and teachers could experience life in a wheelchair for a day.

  • Hello. Thank you for doing this. I have Cerebral Palsy and am in a wheelchair most of the time. Although your video isn't completely accurate as to what I personally go through, it's very close. I'm in my last year of high school and the school is terrible at accommodating for people in wheelchairs' needs. It makes me so angry that people are so ignorant about disabilities, especially my school as it's considered to be one of the best in the country..

  • I acually had someone ask me how I was going to get my shopping home.
