Richard Carleton was good reporter. He was passionate about rooting out the truth. His rude manner was designed to get an interview subject angry and lose control. This had the effect of getting them to tell the truth. Don't forget Hawke was a powerful alpha male who would not hesitate to charm his way through an interview if given half the chance. Carleton could see the charm for what it was and did us all a favour by peeling away the mask to show us the real man.
