This video/song is a beautiful celebration of Nigerian Head-ties especially used by the absolutely stunning, sophisticated and proud Yoruba people of Nigeria.

I'd like to use this video to convey my message to all Africans: Lets go back to wearing our own clothes. No; not just during Kwanzaa or other special events/occasions Everyday. When we do wear our traditional clothes, we are reaching back to and embracing the cradle of life. So lets wear them with pride and celebrate our heritage every day, everywhere. And this is precisely what I intend to do next year - clear my wardrobe and bring back all my "real" clothes that I kept packed in my travel bag ever since I landed in Dubai 3 years ago.

The truth is, when we wear our traditional clothes, we create our own unique look while celebrating and promoting our rich history, tradition, and culture with the bold statement the attire makes. Regardless of change in times and taste, the rich history of Africa in African clothes is evident. We have beautiful colors, beautiful fabrics, adorned with beautiful accessories, designed and tailored reflective of the cultures from which they were derived.

The attires showcased in the video are not the only kind of clothes we have especially with regards to the head-ties. Although Hausa people wear similar attires, they have their own style and limit their use of these kinds of Head-ties to weddings/other special occasions, but they do have a particular kind of head-wrap they wear every day. There are also different kinds of attires worn by the very elegant Igbo people of Nigeria; as well as the beautiful traditional Fulani attires and I can go o n and on.

Africa, with her beautiful diversity has a wide selection of attires. There are fabrics and textiles from silk, cotton, to wool, etc that are very comfortable, simple and durable. The colors are elegant and the designs can be tailored to our individual needs. Why not wear them?

Remember, Be African - Wear African, Eat African, and Live African and WE can start with what WE wear. I'm on IT!

"I join with you in advocating not only the wearing of African centered clothing, but that we as community, seek to control the whole Fashion Industry among our people, from the agricultural level, to Fashion design, manufacturing, distribution, shop keeping, tailoring and millinery. This way we control the whole industry, as Marcus Garvey admonished us, "to control every industry which affects our daily lives". - Elder Mwalimu W. Kabaila

  • Very well said Ebeledi. I wish all African women who use perms would watch the movie "Good Hair," by Chris Rock. I love my natural locks and the freedom that comes with not using toxins on my scalp, endless hours at the salon, high maintenance and the pain and suffering.

  • good message lets also start wearing are own hair...no need for perms!!! we are africans.
