A few of my friends and I were in our weekly OCEAN 201 lab at the University of Washington, when I decided this part of our experiment was worth taking video of. This proved to be a good decision.

A cylindrical glass container filled with corn syrup is rotating on a pottery wheel, with a flask suspended above so it just penetrates the surface of the syrup. The rotation of the container and the friction caused by the flask create very intriguing convection currents in the syrup and a spiraling vortex underneath the flask. Red and blue dye are added to the swirling syrup later...

  • This is impressive footage! The written explanations are also good, but what else is going on in the dish that drives this process? What is the effect of Coriolis on the corn syrup that drives the patterns we see?

    I wouldn't bother you with this if I wasn't a TA for this course for a couple of quarters now...nice video!
