At age nine, John Henry should have been marking time in a retirement home. But the summer of 1984 provided another chapter in the storied history of both John Henry and the Million. John Henry-en route to an unprecedented Horse-of-the-Year title at age nine-motored past the game champion filly Royal Heroine to win the Million for the second time. The roar from the crowd when John Henry returned after the race was deafening, and trainer John McAnally was left practically speechless.

  • Awesome video, my friend! Many thanks for sharing this! What a horse John Henry was and an outstanding call by the legendary Phil Georgeff. Happy New Year!!! :)

  • Hey, Jerry, sorry for the late reply. You're very welcome, and I wish you all the best in the new year as well!

    God bless.

  • They don't make them like that anymore.. :-) He was absolutely brilliant horse...

Do you know what happen to Mourjane?

    Happy New Year... :-)

  • Yes, brilliant is a good word for John Henry. I don't know much about Mourjane, but he ran very well to place third in the 1985 Breeders Cup Turf and is buried at the Clare Court training track in Saratoga. There are more details about him on the pedigreequery website.

Happy New Year to you, too!

  • Wow, go John Henry!

Wish you the best New Year CF!

  • I wish you a fabulous new year as well!

  • A true LEGEND !!!

  • John Henry should be an inspiration for anybody. Whatever your background, your circumstances, your past, your shortcomings, there should be no excuses to reach for the stars!!

  • I still have an amazing poster of the photo finish on my wall. I was 6 at the time, and we live in southern WI so Arlington was our track. I remember going before it went up in flames and got rebuilt. John Henry, greatest horse ever in my book!

  • John Henry left such an impression on me as a kid. A horse I will never forget. I remember this race... John Henry--- the George Foreman of racehorses!

  • thanks for the Phil Georgeff called race. Used to cut school to bet on the races. Never realized what a great announcer Phil was until you hear the others..Phil was great. Heck, even Ed connaughton onthe racing show on channel 26 was great...when he was sober.

If you have any more races with Phil, please post them. Miss him a bunch

  • I love watching these old races and thank you for including the post parade! Nice to hear what they thought about a horse on a given day in his career

  • @youvenoidea1 That is an incredible compliment coming from someone who has followed racing so long. I grew up watching John Henry race. He belonged to my grand-parents Sam and Dottie Rubin. Thanx so much for your comment. Makes me feel good that he is still remembered so fondly among race & horse fans.

  • My grand-parents owned John Henry. Sam and Dottie Ruben (Dotsam Stables). It was incredible growing up as a child seeing these races knowing our family was part of it. Seeing the trophy's in their home when we would go visit them. Amazing part of my life.

THANK YOU SO MUCH for uploading this. It's awesome to be able to show this to my wife and children who did not know my grand-parents let alone John Henry. Thanx again!

  • That's a classic call. Phil Geogreff saying "Heeeeere they come, Spinning out of the turn"

  • We have released a documentary about John Henry, who was without a doubt the most legendary horse. He was a beautiful horse with a beautiful soul and is dearly missed. Check out our Youtube page for the trailer and the website for all other info at john henry movie. Lets not forget the inspiration he was for all who were fortunate enough to know him.
