This is a ten minute black and white silent cut of the Japanese film 'Rodan: The Flying Monster' (Sora no daikaijû Radon, 1956). This version was released on Super 8 for home use before VHS and the such.

I did this basic telecine myself via the simple method of using a video camera to record the projection. The video is silent throughout, however it does includes some subtitles.

The reel also included a very short preview of the Little Rascals which I have uploaded as a separate video.

  • I remember getting a couple of ten minute Super 8 movies for Christmas in 1977. They released Star Wars (believe it or not) and I also received "Destroy All Monsters." They were silent and short.....but I was mesmerized anyway. Great stuff.

  • @GORIZARD4 You must've been born in the mid 80's or the 90's. Before Smart phones and digital cameras, before VHS recorders and VHS cameras. The world, used reel to reel home movie projectors and recorded family events using a Super 8mm movie camera, which was an advanced improvement of the 8mm movie camera of the late 1940's. Steven Spielberg learned to make movies when he was a kid using this equipment. I tried to make a movie myself when i was a kid in the late 70's

  • I never heard about these movie being available on Super-8. VERY interesting, THANKS! By the was, is it me or is the first Rodan movie the only GREAT RODAN FLIGHT footage EVER filmed??! Even the flight scenes from the great Hesie Era 'Godzilla vs Mecha-G' looked fake. his brief appearence in 'G: Final wars somehow never cut it for me. Anyone else see it my way?

  • @GORIZARD4 I think BOTH. Sometimes flicks that were originaly features were condensed into short versions ( they were cheaper to buy that way, contained in a single reel, and less of a hassle to show ), .. and they were also full length ( but they were more expensive as such and contained on more than one reel ) .

  • @BobHershey I dont recal the flicks being in any stores though. I think they were gotten through the mail from catalogs and magazines and such .

  • @BobHershey Yeah, I too remember that some people did have home projectors and 8 mm flicks ( not my own family but some other people I knew ) prior to the home vid phenomenon ( which began about the late 70's ).

  • I'll have to look at youtube and see if I can find any more super 8 cuts...Rodan was one I remember as a child, there was another about a Robot...both were black and white...both purchased at Woolco too! Thanks for posting this....memories....

  • Ah yes, waaaaaaaaay back in the day before Blu-Ray, before DVD, before VHS, even before Betamax, movies were available on 8mm and 16mm film prints. I remember seeing a silent Super 8 film print of "Varan The Unbelievable" at a Woolco store back in 1979.

Even with today's HD pictures and surround sound, these are still kinds fun to watch! :)

  • I still have mine on Super 8 but haven't watched this in ages!!! So awesome in black and white. Why Rodan is one of my faves!!!!!!!!!

  • I want to thank you for posting this. Brings back some SERIOUS memories I had as a child. I can almost hear the tape going through the projector! I'll have to look at the other posts you have and see what others may trigger my mind....
