It just really bugs me to hear people call Elvis "overrated". Show me someone who calls Elvis overrated and I will show you a gibbering idiot with no self awareness.
I really don't listen to him much but he unarguably had a great voice, was a good performer, and was a huge success. He was one of the first stars to try acting as well. To call him overrated is to not understand the term overrated.

Name ONE black artist that sounded even remotely like Elvis back before 1956! The comparison comes from the fact that Elvis was one of the first white singers to CUT LOOSE like the great R&B singers of the day...not because he was ripping them off. White singers up to the that time were restrained...then people like Carl Perkins soaked up so much influence from the black artists and naturally, sooner or later, it was going to be reflected in his music. Bill Haley is another good example

People who speak of Elvis Presley being "overrated" and "stealing" from African Americans have not a clue to what they are talking about. They are almost always young and musically unaware. One can not steal music anymore than one can steal literature or art styles. Mr. Presley was influenced by both African American and European American forms, as were most singers and musicians regardless of their race or ethnicity, and in his turn greatly influenced others as a remarkable entertainer.

Oh Christ, get real. Music historians (and anyone living in reality) credit the first Rock songs to Black people and everyone knows that lol... They came from Blues (which isn't something Elvis created). Elvis stole everything he did from Black artists and everyone knows that. You being a super fan for him doesn't change that fact. What does him being dead have to do with me addressing the fact that he was overrated..? That's not why you're mad. We can still love Elvis but those are the facts..
