12-5-2009 Fuel tanker truck in ditch

On 12/5 about 0930 hrs TFR units responded to a fuel tanker truck that had slid into a drainage ditch in the Port of Tampa at Dawney and Bulk Streets. On scene responders discovered the tanker was sitting partially in the ditch, the only thing stopping the tanker from rolling on its side were the compartments underneath the truck were wedge into the ground. The driver said he was taking a turn when the tires of the truck left the paved road and with the soil on the side of the road being so wet from all the rain it gave way under the truck and the truck slid down into the ditch.

No fuel was leaking, no injuries were reported. The tanker operated by Energy Dispatch of Tampa had just filled up and had about 6,600 gallons of gasoline and 2,100 gallons of diesel on board.

Tampa firefighters and the Tampa Fire Rescue hazardous materials team set up protective foam lines and stood by while the company transferred the fuel from the damaged tanker to another truck. After the damaged truck was emptied large wreckers removed it from the scene. The entire operation was concluded by about 1330 hrs.

No port operations or traffic were impacted.

TFR responded to this alarm with 4 fire engines, 2 ladder trucks, 2 rescue cars, a hazardous materials team and a fireboat. An estimated 36 responders were on scene from fire stations in Palmetto Beach, Downtown, Ybor City, Davis Island and West Tampa.
