Project Trust- 40th Anniversary Video

Nicholas Maclean-Bristol Founder and President of Project Trust, outlines the brief history of the charity.

Project Trust began in 1967 when a group of people, spearheaded by Nicholas Maclean-Bristol, set up an educational trust with the aim of sending young people abroad for a significant length of time to work alongside local communities and learn from them.

The first three boys went to work at a school owned by Prince Alexander Desta, the grandson of the then Emperor of Ethiopia, in a shanty town area of Addis Ababa. Over the past forty years almost six thousand young people have followed in the footsteps of the three pioneers.

They have gone to over fifty countries. The work they have done includes teaching English from China to Chile, working with children with Aids in South Africa, monitoring locust swarms in Mauritania, helping to run outward bound schools in Hong Kong and Malaysia, delivering babies in Jamaica and South Africa, and becoming the surrogate mother to an orphaned chimpanzee in Uganda.

What they have had in common is the Hebridean experience. All have come to the Isle of Coll for a selection course. Here whilst the staff find out if they will benefit from 12 months overseas they discover as much as they can about a community that is very different from that to which they belong. This helps them understand the community with which they will spend their year overseas. Once selected they return to Coll for briefing and training and then for debriefing at the end of their year overseas.

The longevity of the organisation now means that we have started sending the children of our first volunteers overseas: still from the Isle of Coll, and still with the same aim, of enabling young people to work alongside and learn from local communities overseas. It worked then and it works now.
