I think this tradition is called "The Knocking", but I'm not positive. Because the plaque used to be on the stadium door and the drum major would "knock" on the door to let everyone know the band was there! The drum major runs up to this sign and smacks it with his baton. It's hard to see, but this time he actually hits it so hard that the end falls off of his baton! :)
I am proud to say that this drum major is from my hometown! :)

Not only that SPKcrow, but prior to 2001, for BIG games, the drum major would put his baton THROUGH the wood door, LOL. (they didn't like that either. . .but wood doors could take it/ be repaired better than metal ones).

The story goes... Before the stadium was remodeled in 2001, there was a large wood door that the drum major would hit or "knock" with his baton to announce the arrival of the band. After the remodeling, the old door was replaced with a metal door. In an effort to not break tradition the drum major "knocked" on the new door leaving a large dent. To prevent further damage, a metal plate with the drum major crest was installed on the outside wall of the stadium to symbolize the 3 knocks.

apparently symbol he hits use to be on the door of the stadium, and the drum major use to "knock" on the symbol to note that the band was ready. Now I can only assume it's done symbolically.
