@AntarcticDreamer Agreed, the Scottish way of life was oppressed after the battle of culloden/ jacobite revolution. Gaelic suppressed, Bagpipes outlawed etc etc.
There is certainly a grudge that still exists, be it sometimes comical generally, however it lies in history and passed down through generations.

@andrewshere I don't know about the rest of Scotland, but being raised near Inverness (and near Culloden) the grudge isn't exactly encouraged but it is an assumed part of the culture you're brought up in, particularly in school. We were taught about the battle of Culloden, the suppression of Gaelic and the Highland clearances as local history, with very little awareness of the time scale. There was also not much in the way of balance - locals come back to teach, so the grudge is passed on.

@loreean I just try to sing it :-)

@andrewshere the grudges are only there as the legacy is still a real reality no matter how glossed over we are told it is.......the poorest surnames in Britain are generally those who supported the uprising lol....how the hell is that still ?.....once power is closer to the people of the highlands the grudge will be gone totally I feel

@3tangle3 I agree with you.But how long do we blame the sons for the sins of the father? No one is really clean in history. The Highland Clearances couldn't have taken place without the collusion of some clan chiefs. In Uist, landlords even reduced some rents.Genocide is absolutely the correct word for the aftermath of Culloden, no excuses. But Scots have suffered aplenty at the hands of its own.Lots of Highland/Lowland antagonism, and central to the Glencoe massacre. But grudges from 300+years ago?
-
@andrewshere another thing about culloden they talk about the trumped up toff prince charlie.....but no one talks about the genocide of the gaelic clans that followed....they are ignored as cannon fodder......my family has a story of a 9year old child getting an axe in head because his dad was suspected jacobite....but in reality his dad had died years before
-
@andrewshere i deplore violence....i suffered bullying. But the legacy of history and ppl bullying each other....pushes people towards violence....the treatment of the irish was only ever going to end in tears for both sides.....its sick but sadly true
-
@3tangle3 That's true, but a mother's dead son is always dead, and innocent victims are always innocent. I just wish people wouldn't live in the past. A better varied future, yes.
-
@andrewshere one mans terrorist is another man freedom fighter................maybe ppl here should be encouraging a positive debate on increasing gaelic usage towards a better varied future of this planet

It seems I can never access Scottish or Irish music without finding someone - usually many more - who are stuck in the bloody past. Oh Capercaillie, great - let's talk about Culloden or something. Oh great - Altan - let's shout Up the IRA.
Thumbs up to the people who genuinely come here for the music.
...can anyone supply the lyrics to this beatuful song..gaelic please....

The lyrics of all Capercaillie songs are on the band's website. Gaelic songs also have an English translation!
