Are You Cool Enough for PS Vita?

In preparation for the PlayStation Vita's western launch, Sony's released a series of photographs meant to communicate Sony's vision for the "PlayStation Vita lifestyle".


Evidently this lifestyle isn't applicable to anyone who isn't a physically attractive early to mid 20's male hipster.

SCEA President Jack Tretton says that adult 3DS gamers lack self respect, but Nintendo gamers have never needed a campaign aligning their systems with an elite of superficially attractive "cool dudes" to convince them it was okay use their devices in public.

Of course Nintendo and Microsoft do promotional material with paid models using their systems, the problem with these "Vita Lifestyle" images is the explicit lack of diversity present in Xbox and Nintendo promotional material, and Sony's eagerness to promote the Vita based on superficial "coolness" rather than on the Vita's games themselves.

And with Vita sporting what I personally consider a very strong day one library for a new system, I can't help but wonder why Sony feels the need to use this contrived fashionability as a crutch for the Vita.

@the1andonlyxx Yes, because its impossible to think a system might be cool and also criticize a poorly conceived, ironic set of promotional materials related to it, right?

If you think I hate Sony or the PS Vita merely because I want to criticize these photos, the response I already posted should clear this up for you.

@gguru1 Additionally, I also have to wonder if you even watched this video in the first place, or simply saw that I was criticizing an aspect of the Vita's promotional materials and went on the offensive.

Gotta say,this video is intelligently funny. I don't know how else to describe it. You make a lot of sense in it, but the genuine humor in it (especially the skateboard bit at the end) had me rolling. But hey, this is Sony's way and to be honest they need to find a new way because they haven't been successful relying on the "lifestyle" gimmick as a marketing tactic in a LONG time and Apple's domination in that regard doesn't make it any easier. I almost prefer those PSP squirrels over this.

Ultimately I expect these photos are probably going to be cropped down and used in some promotional material in the context of the system's actual games and features (like Nintendo print stuff they've done for the DSi), and I expect Sony will get it together, but the fact that they merely released THESE photos alone as a stand alone press kit is just one of those silly moments.

@RyHoMagnifico Yeah, but it was nothing close to THIS. The 2004 stuff was just a couple of more overtly "conceptual" images of PSP being a futuristic next gen walkman.

So u prefer nintendo? Personally I am a sony boy, but also have a wii, and have had gameboys, but whichever company comes out w better games+graphics will be getting my hard earned cash, and as far as the pics, well I am tottally sick of these advertising execs shoving what they think is cool down the down to earth consumer, just my two cents.
