  • sometimes kids just need a little more time than others, most speech issues resolve themselves by age 4.....so dont worry to much!

  • ....behind the eardrum. They do not remove fluid, but should look for cause, whether allergies, a tube in the ear not working properly (eustation tube) , etc.

If there is no fluid but child has hearing test that shows hearing loss, this can be from several causes , simply born that way, damage to ear drum, etc. Depending on what state you live in, there are many free programs for children to recieve speech therapy and have all your concerns answered. My son, is now 3 and his speech is fine...

  • It is best to find a pediatric ENT but nessasary; Yes, the ENT can do a hearing test...for young children this involves a fun soundproof room where they use age appropriate testing (sesame street charectars that light up or somethig) They judge simply by watching your childs reactions and where they look(left or right) or if they look at all....They can do a simple pressure test by blowing a little air in the ear to see if the eardrum responds or moves...if it does not move there is fluid ..

  • It was not ear infections, but most likely allergies. If the "eustation tube" which we all have in our ears is not working properly then there will ALWAYS be the presence of at least some fluid which would make your daughter hear things as if she were under water. Getting a hearing test and having the eardrums tested which is very simple and quick will give you a good idea of what is going on. Let me know if I can help!

  • He did not have tubes put in, if you find a good ENT (ear nose and throat doctor) They can determine if tubes are really nessasary and whether or not allergies, or just a cold are the cause of the congestion, or fluid build up. I got a second opinion and I am glad I did! His speech is improving everyday with speech therapy

  • Thank you for your post as it brought me comfort to see how your son sounds and that is how my boy sounds when he does get a word out, did your son only have the problem in 1 ear or both, and how did it affect him overall behavior etc. What age did you notice it at? What advice do you have for me? I am really trying to find parents that can explain it at home, the doctors are not with the children 24/7 and it isn't their child, just another patient so I figure other parents could help me more.

  • By the way, tubes are called grommets where I live in Australia is that what your child had done? I am not sure what they call them where you are. But I want to ask as I am a little concerned with my son as he flaps his arms around when he gets frustrated and does a couple of other weird things but the Maternal Health Nurse said that would be in response to what he is hearing and he is just doing what he is meant to at that age and that is copy everything including the sounds hears.

  • Thank you for this clip my son was diagnosed with glue ear right from birth and it hasn't cleared up he is now 2yrs 3 mths old and has delayed speech. He starting getting speech and then it fell away. I was starting to wonder if he was autistic but the Maternal Health Nurse said he wasn't, it is most likely a hearing loss of some level, he can hear but not well. Did your son need grommets etc, also did he have autistic looking behavior due to frustration of not hearing properly as my son does

  • Oh, another question, does the ENT do the hearing testing or just the diagnosis of what the problem is if the child's hearing test is shown that there is a problem? Thank you!

  • I have some questions. How is the testing done? How do they remove the fluid from the ears? Did you find an ENT that specializes with pediatric patients or did that matter? My son has a speech delay and I need to get his hearing tested.

  • Did ear infections cause the fluid buid-up or was there some other cause?

My daughter is 18 months and I'm concerned about her hearing. I know she can hear, but I don't know how well.
