This song was first released in 1969 on the Major Minor label as the B-Side of MR MOODY`S GARDEN but without drums This is the second version released in 1971 on the Columbia label. Gilbert has never liked the up-tempo arrangment his first producers did on this recording , so in 1995 he recorded his " definitive " ballad version. The lyrics were inspired by the assassination of Robert Kennedy in 1968.

I dedicate this video to a very special Spanish lady named MAGDA ..........

  • Many thanks, mohawk , for posting this song.I love the later version but the more I hear this version, the more I admire it.The last verse is terrific and it is interesting that it is not included in the later ballad version.I have been drawn in by the brilliance of Gilbert`s lyrics...

  • @212wakka Yes I have never figured out why he doesn`t use the last verse on later versions . Someone should ask him the reason someday in an interview .

  • ...And of course now I use the opportunity to listen to revisited this version again, lol!

  • Yes, this is too up-tempo

  • I believe this is the second version from 1971! The original 1969 version didn't have drums in it, just piano and orchestra, but no drums. It had different ending too. Very rare and hard to find.

  • Thank Mohawk

  • I've always liked this song since i first heard it on a documentary about Gilbert around 1971-2. He played it in his house on an upright piano at this fast tempo with the really thumping piano of his style. Anyone see this? He also did Mr. Moody's Garden and a few others. This was before video, but I have got the audio on cassette somewhere. The songs weren't complete and there's dialogue over some of them as I remember. But they're still very interesting versions.
