What is the difference between "Subud" and "Latihan?" Subud is the organization, the association, the 501(c)(3), and latihan is the name of the spiritual exercise or training.

Where does the word "Subud" come from? It's a contraction of three Sanskrit words: Susila: Noble or high quality or correct behavior, Budhi: Spark of the divine that is in everything, Dharma: Possibility to surrender and be guided by God or the universe.

  • @homeropmedina, Unfortunately Subud as an organization isn't very interested in increasing the membership so they don't put any effort into outreach activities. In a sense, it's hard to get in. Basically you have to know someone already in Subud, or you have to contact the local group closest to where you live (if there is one...they're really only in major cities). See the website subud dot org

  • Yes, once you're opened, you remain opened. You can just show up and do latihan. Some people (i.e., Helpers) in some groups may question or be suspicious if they've never heard of you, but I'd think they would still let you join in the latihan. A guy came back after about 15 years to our group a few weeks ago, and we just read the "opening statement" again, then did latihan.

    Aloha!

  • SOO ..WHERE DO I SIGN-UP?

  • Once your open, your open? I ask because I used to attend but now don't. We have small group in Spokane Washington but it's like two guys or something. It's been 20 some years. Great video .

  • Well, I suppose that was very generic description of what Subud is and the Latihan,...Like you said if you asked 2000 people what is Subud you would get 2000 different answers, I really love the T-Shirt with Bapak's photo on it. I am sure he would be surprised to know that his image is now being sold :) I grew up in a house where my parents both belonged to Subud and have seen Bapak many times in person... anyway thanks for upload. Brightest Blessings

  • Much better with the Bapak t-shirt than the other one!

  • Aliman, thank you for this explication...i love the concept of "birthright" of humans to union with the divine spark.
