Behind the scenes of "Basic Engine Building" DVD http://store.boxwrench.net/Basic-Engine-Building-DVD_p_0-8.html

A special internet only treat from the producers of the BoxWrench Series!

Basic Engine Building DVD - Behind the Scenes: Small Block Ford 351 Windsor Diagnosis

We gonna show you some never before seen footage from the filthy Ford 351W we pulled out of a boat. BoxWrench Director Brent Bye recaps the story of discovering the engines problem and what ensued as the tear down process proceeded.

Basically salt water was leaking into a cylinder head thru some hidden steel water plugs that only these small block 351 W motors have. Being a marine engine they needed to be replaced with rust proof brass plugs. After running for 5 years the water eroded holes straight thru them. Water pressurized from the water pump was squirting into the cylinder heads right onto the rocker arms, valves and valve springs, ultimately all the way down to the oil pan and crankcase. It all made out for a surprising tear down.

This particular Ford 351 Windsor marine motor was fully rebuild on camera in the "Basic Engine Building" DVD. Even a catastrophic blown engine like this can be rebuilt with the proper knowledge and tools. The BoxWrench Series is designed to give you that knowledge and let you have fun with it.

The full DVD with all of the interactive menus, Tools section and engine Glossary terms is available here...

  • the cyl head he showed was not off that engine. that head sat outside in the weather for years.

  • @prozanine actually, that cylinder head (with the rusty detail shot of the corrosion) did come off of the actual engine disassembled in the video... it was hot tanked clean, the problem was discovered and yes the head did sit out side for a bit. Then a few months later, we had the chance to shoot the detail shots of the corroded plug in the head for this video... sometimes it just takes a while to get to the details.

  • all cuz of a plug??? O_O

  • Yup, all that was caused by a corroded little plug in the cylinder head...

  • maybe this is a stupid question where did you guys get the parts to rebuild the engine? I have the same motor in 1986 ski nautique and we discovered water in the oil

  • Any machine shop that will perform the repair work will be able to find replacement parts for you.

We bored out the engine block and had to get a complete engine kit that had pistons, rings, bearings, gaskets and valve train seals to name a few.

Companies like Mahle, Sealed Power, Speed Pro and Fel-Pro all have the pieces you'll need.

  • Wow... I was thinking someone would have just poured a few liters into the oil cap accidentally...

  • My milkshake brings all the mechanics to the yard, Damn right, it's better than yours.

  • water manages to get around places somehow

  • Part two: I have recent Gt40X heads and the shortblock is a production unit with less than 60k miles. Upon changing the oil pan the rotating assy and oil pan looked extremely clean as did the top of the heads. I changed the oil and all looked clean. I am consuming a bit of oil and a bit of coolant. The radiator has a slow drip. Pulled the spark plugs and all looked good except for the rear most passegner side. Caked carbon deposit. Looks like a new shortblock, what do you say?

  • I have the same Alfredo sauce coming out of my bronco's 5.8 Oil filler cap breather line. It ends up foaming up the PCV filter and dripping out onto the plastic wheel well. I recently had the valve covers and the intake replaced with an edelbrock efi performer unit. I also had the oil pan replaced due to a bad leak above the starter. This issue didn't materialize until these changes took place. I also relocated the PCV to the center of the intake plenum to equalize ingestion of PCVapors.???

  • Yuummy!! Capuuchiino!! =D

  • I'm surprised that engine wasn't totally ruined.

  • taste it yum
