British Television Channel 4 - 7th December 2000. According to popular wisdom, psychopaths are crazed and bloodthirsty serial killers. The reality is not so simple. While many psychopaths do commit violent crimes, not all psychopaths are criminals and not all criminals are psychopathic. Psychopaths are found in many walks of life and are often successful in competitive professions. However they are also ruthless, manipulative and destructive. Equinox reports on techniques developed by psychologists to work out whether a person is psychopathic and shows how brain scientists are coming close to mapping the malfunctions in the brain that cause a person to be a psychopath. In Britain one person in 200 is likely to be a psychopath. However psychopaths are thought to be responsible for half of all reported crimes and to make up between 15% and 20% of the prison population. The program looks at the most recent research into the brains and behavior of psychopaths and assesses the prospects for the treatment or containment of this antisocial group of people who create such a disproportionate amount of destruction. Psychopaths who have been convicted of appalling crimes explain with disturbing clarity what motivated them in their violent and destructive behavior. They speak without shame, guilt, remorse or empathy with their victims. Though they are articulate and, at times, plausible and charming, they lack the range of emotions experienced by the rest of society. They know the difference between right and wrong but they do not feel it. Robert Hare, Professor of Psychology at the University of Vancouver, has devised a system of assessment called the Psychopathy Checklist. In specialized interviews, psychologists assess individuals on a scale of 0 to 40 for a series of character traits, including callousness, superficial charm, lack of empathy and many others (for more detail look at How to recognize a psychopath). Anyone whose score is greater than 26 is diagnosed as psychopathic.

@Skindoggiedog You are correct.
Not all businessmen / politicians are psychopaths.
Thus they should all be assessed for psychological soundness before being allowed to serve the public. The role of the public servant is to serve the public. I think a case for human empathy - as opposed to strict individual narcissism - being a criteria for holding office could be made.
Not that they should be killed. Just barred from public service.

There are serial killers and sexual sadists - within the lumpen proletariat, the working class and the middleclass - so where are they all within the elite? Perhaps, they are better at covering their tracks or maybe they have so much power they don't need to entertain psycho/sexual perversions?

Key: "They do not experience emotions/empathy/i.e. ... IN THE SAME WAY THAT 'WE' DO"! People think we don't experience any emotions at all, and that's just not true. We do experience emotions, just not in the same way that you do!
We're estimated to make up 0,5 to 1% of the population, but "They're all around us". It seems to me you normal folk are all around us, and not vice versa. This is the kind of thing that cause a lot of misconceptions, and paranoia, about psychopaths.

regardless of what they say, one can think themselves into psychopathy... but what is that? mind over matter? Can that be called environmental? or is it transcendent?
whatever. this documentary is simple fear mongering.

@WeAreChangeTelford Don't make the mistake of thinking all ruthless businessmen are psychopaths.
There are those particularly skilled at compartmentalization, who aren't psychopathic at all, yet succeed in business by completely disassociating themselves, emotionally, from their working environment.

@WeAreChangeTelford Well, 'Without Conscience' is more about psychopaths who are pretty much common criminals and con artists. If you want to read about those who may be among the ruling elite, politicians and big corporations, i.e., you might find more information in another book by Hare and Babiak: 'Snakes in Suits'. It's about the so called White Collar psychopaths. They're the ones who sometimes get up the social ladder. Another thing: Very few get a PCL-R score of 40 like Wayne. '^L^,
