DRIVEN TO SERVE
28th Annual YMCA A.K. Guy Award - Honoring Phil Smart, Sr.
Nov. 1, 2011
About Phil Smart, Sr.
Phil Smart, Sr. is exceptionally gifted in the art of persuasion, and he's dedicated his life to using this gift for the good of others.
He's spent 52 years building the reputation for integrity of the Mercedes-Benz dealerships that bear his name in greater Seattle. At the same time, he's been driven to serve as both a volunteer and volunteerism advocate, helping to meet the critical needs of children in our community and to support child-focused organizations with a global reach.
Mr. Smart's discipline and commitment to service were forged while on active duty in the U.S. Army during WWII and in the reserve. He volunteered at Seattle Children's hospital for more than 40 years and has held leadership roles with the Boy Scouts of America and Seattle Rotary. He's addressed more than 65,000 people with his philosophy of service and lessons learned from sick and dying children.
At 92, Mr. Smart is more enthusiastic than ever about what he considers his life's purpose: to motivate others to help change lives using their "third eight". We each have 24 hours in a day -- 8 for work or school, 8 for sleep and a third 8 for giving back to our community and our world.
