Letter from Charlotte Brontë to Constantin Héger
Brontë wrote this letter to Constantin Héger 8 January 1845. According to lore, not only was Héger the great passion of Brontë's life, but he inspire the titular character in Brontë's first work "The Professor" along with Edward Rochester from "Jane Eyre".
Héger and his wife ran the boarding school at which Brontë taught English. While at the school, Brontë quickly became infatuated with the older man wrote him several letters reflecting her heartsick turmoil.
Whatever Héger's feelings toward Brontë, he ripped up her letters. In a strange twist of events, Héger's wife painstakingly stitched together the torn correspondence. Their existence today results solely from her efforts.
