Corexit, fallout, or BP-A's, are all good candidates. So is a shift in ocean current temperatures and PH levels. Or a methane clathrate field off-gassed, asphyxiating the lot out right, or created an anoxic pool, that favored hydrogen sulfide producing bacteria, then the snails were anesthetized to death. If it either of the later 2, those beach combers are in peril.
