Mezzo-soprano Joyce DiDonato singing Rinaldo's aria "Venti Turbini" from Handel's opera Rinaldo, from her recital in Paris. November 30th, 2007, Théâtre des Champs Élysées.

Ensemble Matheus
Conductor: Jean-Cristophe Spinosi

Italian libretto

Di speranza un bel raggio
Ritorna a consolar l'alma smarrita;
Sì adorata mia vita!
Corro veloce a discoprir gl'inganni;
Amor, sol per pietà, dammi i tuoi vanni!

Venti, turbini, prestate
Le vostre ali a questo piè!
Cieli, numi, il braccio armate
Contro chi pena mi diè!

Joyce was taking over Marie Nicole Lemieux for this recital, the latter being unable to perform this night. She thus sang with sheets of music, and for this specific aria, she made a mistake while reading the score, having forgotten a page. She got lost, the orchestra kept on playing, and she looked at the public laughing and saying "I'm completely lost". When the encore came, she said "Well, if you allow me, I would really like to sing this entirely!" So this is her 2nd shot :)

  • not a video, alas - shot in Salzburg or someplace?

    too fast and the playing is messy, but the singing certainly isn't! Go Yankee Diva

  • From my description: November 30th, 2007, Théâtre des Champs Élysées.

  • sorry, i assumed you meant the PHOTO was from TDC, which it isn't: it's from last summer after she broke her leg (see crutch on floor next to her?)!

    My mistake. THANKS FOR THE POST!!! Their playing is still messy but v exciting and JDid is fab, always (just saw her Rosina in Los Angeles)

  • Yep, I know, just a few random pics of some of her concerts, because I couldn't find any about this specific concert. The photo from Salzburg is amazing, imo :)

    And you're very welcome! You saw her in LA? Gosh, you're so lucky! I'm a little bit to far to fly over there, but I definitely have to go and see her as Rosina someday. Just thinking about what she did with her wheelchair makes drop my jaw. She's amazing!

  • Aaaaaaaaaaaah! I've loved this aria since I heard it in Farinelli <3<3<3<3

  • though I don't remember this aria ves'

  • Just compare this to David Daniels and one can hear that Rinaldo does not sound right in a feminine voice. Fast notes sound off to me tuning wise. Something not quite right here.

  • Beaucoup trop vite - ridicule !

  • @MrMarcvus But in Handel's time it was common for mezzos to sing the male parts originally intended for castrati if none were available (or if the composer wanted one), and for castrati to sing female parts at times. This is authentic! It should also be remembered that we can't know if castrati sounded like either mezzos or countertenors, so in the absence of a genuine castrato, both can get away with singing this kind of material. While I love me some countertenor, both have something to offer!

  • I wish women would leave the Castrati/counter tenor arias alone they have a very different sound and were only rarely used in the opera of that period. as a Counter tenor I would not touch any soprano arias leave the male arias alone. It is like a flute playing recorder music does not sound right.

  • the violin is like a squeaking squealing cassette tape gone bad. hahahahaha I know the effect trying to be done here.... but it didn't work.

  • This is the kind of force I feel many renditions of this song lack. RInaldo is MAD, after all! Joyce Didonato tore this aria up - it's a damn shame the poor instrumentalists were given such an absurd tempo...

  • Poor Haendel, poor Joyce, fucking violin

  • the instrumentalist was horrible...Joyce was Perfect!!!!

  • did the instrumentalists have to pee? so sloppy! Joyce was fabulous as ALWAYS though.

  • belíssimo!!!!bravo
