keep in mind that in the schoolyard these creative boys will not just be labelled gays but taunted and teased and potentially worse - look at what is going on in the US right now with all the gay teen suicides. this is a serious issue. ads like this give bigots the green light to act like bullies.
ok the thing with this ad is... it is not even 'funny'! it is lame as! i am gay and yes i have a sense of humour about it as i watch shows like little britain and laugh all the way through it. this ad however i was offended by, as it helps perpetuate a stupid and WRONG stereotype that guys who are creative are all gay. so whenever boys show an interest in art, design, music, photography, fashion, dance, etc it is normal & ok to label them gay.
@bwatsonbrown 'gay people should be offended as well'
thanks for telling me how to feel, but i'll make up my own mind. people take things too seriously. get over it. enjoy life. why be a little bitch about every little thing. this commercial was not intended to offend, or incite hatred, and gays make up a large target market for furniture and homeware stores.
i'm gay and i don't find this remotely offensive. why do people tip-toe around it. big deal. it's light hearted and funny.
different people et made fun of all the time. that's a big part of many cultures sense of humour. if a minority group wants to be considered equal, they must also accept the other aspects that go along with being an equal member of society. gay people make light hearted fun of straight people.
when it comes from a place of hate that is another issue entirely.
it shouldn't be offensive to either gay or straight people.
its not saying to be creative you must be gay at all.
Its just a funny add.
The mum most likely said to her daughter jokingly something like
'gee sweetie your dad just might be gay :P'
if the add was reversed and a gay couple had something built from scratch or something and one of the partners says to his partner 'ohh my big straight man can build :P'
I think this makes light of a potentially serious family situation. Gay people should be offended also as it reduces them to not much more than a caricature.
The people at M&C Saatchi must be gay, if they claim to be so creative.
This undermines the role and value of husbands and fathers.
I find this quite offensive. How can it be ok to affirm the stereotype that creative people must be gay? So straight people can't be creative?
How is it ok to be making a joke about a mother who is questioning the sexuality of their father openly to her children? Will there be a sequel to the add showing the family being ripped apart as the father leaves with his gay lover, and the mother remarries someone less creative. I'm sure that would sell plenty of furniture...

As a straight Dad I find the suggestion that creative men must be homosexuals extremely offensive.
