Capitalism has helped to progress humanity, but we need to adapt to the new reality of advancing technology and the unsustainable depletion of our natural resources. Some other useful readings:

Take a look at the modern manufacturing process to see how automated it has become, http://youtu.be/kvf29R7nXlM. Economic stagnation is the result of too much control over too much wealth in too few hands. Economic growth is only possible with a vibrant mass market of consumers who have the means spend, http://www.nytimes.com/imagepages/2007/03/29/business/20070329_TAX_GRAPHIC.html. Notice how unemployment lasts longer in the last four recessions than all previous ones, the result of offshoring and automation, http://cr4re.com/charts/chart-images/PercentJoblossesSept2011.jpg.

  • Rule #1 of economics: resources are limited. If something is limited, and is useful, it has value. If something has value, very few people will want to give it up freely. Hence, those goods need to be taken by force (aka by government). As the world is now learning, government can not solve social or economic problems. This movement is communism hiding behind techno-optimism. I am supportive of the latter, not the former.

  • @sassiestsquire Rich people only have power because you give it to them, think about it.

  • This would never work, righ people will never give up their power.

  • this is such a great new idea and the next logical step

  • Looking at all these other economic options, I don't see any other way to get rid of the debt and such as a resource based economy. This sounds like a good plan.

  • @1boysinblue we are the product of our own environment. people nowadays are raised in a capitalist society which teaches to be selfish. In this system there would be none of that ..a complete revamp of our culture.

  • @artichoke862 I think so. Unfortunately, people are just too geared to be corrupt and greedy. The U.S. and other countries started with good intentions but look at it now. The Roman empire was around for thousands of years before it fell, but the us has only been around for around 200 years give or take and percentage wise there are more wars and instability than ever before. I totally agree that this is a good concept but it would never happen in my opinion

  • Sounds good but mankind is selfish, greedy, and imperfect. There will always be people who want more for themselves while everybody else has less and they want it without any effort put forth on there part.

  • @artichoke862 Money is what corrupts people, but power also corrupts people... but what makes so many people so incredibly powerful in our society is money. When you remove money, it really makes most people, if not all.. much more equal to one another.

So it may not be a perfect plan and there is much to think about... it it still far superior to our current system... where you're value as a human being is judged by how much money you accumulate.

  • Can't the resource based economy be abused and distorted just like the monetary system? Is it fool proof and fully reliable?
