Sangalai School assembly, Vanuatu

Approximately 300 students from the Maskelynes attend Sangalai school, near Lutes on Uliveo. Some of the older students come from smaller islands nearby and are boarders as daily transport would be difficult to arrange. If students pass the year 8 exam they may be offered a year 9/10 tuition scholarship at another school, perhaps on the mainland of Malekula. Boarding costs are about A$25 per week which may not seem much but is quite a sum if you live in a self sufficient community that has limited access to (or real need for) money. Many students will not continue their schooling because their families can't afford the boarding and transport costs.
