Steiner School is a portrait of the well known Holywood school in N.Ireland, based on the progressive ideas of Rudolf Steiner. The ethos aims to nurture the whole child, both academically and spiritually and to develop the individual talents, which every child possesses.

In the words of one teacher at the school, "we will develop their abilities so that when they become young adults, they can go out and create society as they want to create it, not as we want them to be".

At a time of national debate around the pressures on 'childhood' and at a point when school and university systems are increasingly 'industry-focused', this interesting film offers a child-centred view of education, which seems as radical now as it did in the 1920s.

  • I attended the Holywood School. This video brings me back to some of the happiest times of my life. Contrary to the speculation in some of the comments here, we did not all end up as drug using anarchists. I am a homicide detective working in the northeastern US these days. I regard my Steiner education as a major component the development of my analytical mind... phew.

  • @CyberWastedSLAYER Presenting students with graduated challanges is perhaps the most efficient method of promoting learning and encouraging the development of social skills needed to meet the challanges of public life, developed so far. Contemporary education fails some children, but produces a vastily greater amount of perfectly competent individuals. If properly resourced its still superior to Steiner schools, because of the routine and structure that it provides.

  • @Jsledge85 Did you learn anything from the video?Appears not! They stated that they acknoledge & nurture individal children's current level of ability and development. This doesn't mean segregated learning. Looks to me like a harmonious cohesive happy enviroment where kids can express themselves and prosper rather than be potentially left behind . Surely develops a broard spectrum of life skills incl' academia. A refreshing focused well developed curriculum. Others should take note

  • The educational model used by the Steiner School emphasises individuality to such an extreme it exceeds the bounds of reason! Individuals are a constituent part of society, not entities completely unto themselves. The discipline and structure of a conventional learning environment functions to instill the self-control needed ro facilitate learning and integrate the child into the society as a contributing member. Education has operated this way since Plato's academy, and should not be changed.

  • Excellent video.

  • sounds like a cult sorry i spelt it wrong:-)

  • i went to the steiner school in devon, uk, and our gardner was abully and we had to goose step in our drama classes.

  • I go to a Waldorf/Steiner school and this is probaly doing more damage than good to the education i think someone should make something a bit more interesting and up to date.

  • I also attended this school. In fact I was in Alastairs' class and also remember my days at the school very fondly. I have my own very successful business and can say with complete honesty that Steiner had a very positive influence on my life. Maybe Jammyjaja should have gone there and could then put their opinion out in concise grammar instead of the mis-spellings and grammatically incorrect dribble.

  • Its not for me, but hey, if it works for you thats great!
