Well here it is, my musical life as a mixtape. I currently work part time as a musical instruments specialist/protools teacher at Best Buy 1782. When I'm not at Best Buy I work as a mix/recording engineer here in Los Angeles. Here is a little info about my life as a mixtape. When I originally read the word "mixtape" the first thing that came to my mind was a video mixtape or mashup style video similar to what you would see in a club behind a DJ. When I'm working in the studio I use a ton of various effects to sculpt sound and since we couldn't use music I thought why not use a ton of effects on both the picture and audio of my video. The original video was recorded with a green screen through Quicktime Pro, then imported into ArKaos VJ Software where scenes were looped and processed with various effects. Then using Pro Tools and ReWire I rewired the video software to Pro Tools and sequenced the video and audio via MIDI at 120 BPM. The nice thing is, if you have a track thats 120 bpm it will sync to picture perfectly and this bpm can be changed as needed. Oh how I love technology!!!! I have an HD version of the video that I will post after the contest. The whole 15MB size limit rule killed my video quality because I made sure the audio was the highest resolution possible.
I've always had a fascination with music and in 1998 I started writing electronic music after I purchased my first DAW (AcidLoops) from Best Buy in Upland Ca. I produced electro from 98 to 2007 until I decided it was time to really get serious about audio engineering and production. I researched the best audio school in the states and was soon working toward my degree at the acclaimed media school Full Sail University. Everything seemed to come naturally to me, the equipment, software and signal flow. Before I knew it I was getting straight A's and 100's on every hands on practical exam. I was also getting very well known by the staff. As a result of my outstanding academic performance and professionalism I was invited to some very special private meetings with some of the audio industry's most respected individuals. Some of these individuals make appearances in my mixtape including 2-time Grammy Award recipient Phil Tan, Glenn Swan (SonyBMG Music Studios, ChungKing, Premier Digital Studios) and my all time recording hero and mentor multi Grammy Award winning engineer Bruce Swedien.
I've included pictures of these individuals because they have helped to teach and encourage me in the early years of my career. Bruce Swedien in particular really showed me what being an audio engineer is all about. When I was young, I listened to a lot of Michael Jackson and now here I was sitting at the same console (Harrison32c) with the engineer that recorded all of those hit records. (Thriller Son!) It was absolutely amazing to say the least. I really look up to Bruce Swedien and in the same way I look up to both Jimmy Iovine and Dr. Dre who are both outstanding engineers, super producers and music industy guru's. Collectively they possess so much audio knowledge it's staggering and I've spent a great amount of time trying to research their engineering/production techniques. I know about Dre's love of SSL consoles, Quantegy 499, C800G's and 1073's. I know that Jimmy got his start as a recording engineer in the mid 70's, became one of the biggest producers of the 1980's and later co-founded Interscope in the 90's. To me, this opportunity is like a baseball player getting the chance to play a game with Babe Ruth or Mickey Mantle. A chance of a lifetime!
