1961 Spanish surrealist melodrama satire from director Luis Buñuel starring Silvia Pinal, Fernando Rey and Margarita Lozano. Pinal plays an orphaned young woman about to take her vows to become a nun, when her uncle and benefactor (Fernando Rey) attempts to corrupt her. Film historian Halliwell wrote, "Often hilarious . . . packed with shades of meaning, most of them sacrilegious." This controversial satire was banned upon its release by the Spanish government for obscenity and blasphemy. Hungarian Documentary Film maker Robert Vas wrote, "One of the cinema's few major philosophical works."
