Don Barden was praised as an African-American business pioneer who racked up a string of firsts and who often made himself available to help others. Rev. Jesse Jackson, founder of the Rainbow/PUSH Coalition, gave a eulogy that highlighted Barden's achievements and struggles.

"Don didn't follow opinion polls, he molded opinion." Jackson told about 1,500 people at Greater Grace Temple during a two-hour funeral. "He lifted others as he climbed, he stretched the limits of our imagination." He constantly referred to Barden as a "dream man" and "odds buster" who never stopped making dreams come true. "How Do You Measure A Man"?
