Interesting stuff, and as always Alain de Botton is charmingly sophisticated. I do wonder however how does the "will to life" concept work with homosexuals? I mean what drives same sex individuals to pursue each other's affections if they can't 'propagate the species'?

From reading some of these comments it is pretty amusing how some take another persons ideas and immediately make them their own without filtering them through their own various experiences, desires and aspirations. The sheep mentality is definitely alive and well unfortunately for them.

Do not agree. Desire to self destruct is just as strong as desire to survive. They are both natural. Proof : birth then death. If desire to live is subconscious then so is the desire to die. Continuation of the species is not why love exists. It's more complex than that, if the will to life was that strong and paramount to my existence, then why do I not just ignore the laws and forcefully inseminate as many women as I can?

@sicof065 I like the quote. Thanks. I still think that it depends upon the activity taking place. Like I mentioned above with extreme or loud music. It is one thing to attend a concert with the expectation of hearing it, thus temporarily putting aside intelligent inquiry, and quite another to try to endure that kind of noise when studying or trying to concentrate. In my opinion, if a man can never distinguish that differentiation, and is always annoyed by noise, then he is a shallow man.

Schopenhauer never said he hated loud noise. He hated it when it was interrupting thought-that is, when one is in concentration. An example is myself. I love heavy metal music. Yet I hate it when I am in the library and someone's fucking cell phone goes off, or if there are sirens or other disturbances in the streets. In fact, I don't have to be studying to hate those repetitive noises, which annoy me. But when I am ready to hear music, I am ready.

I have learned through the "hard nocks that life throws at you" that every man needs a woman and vice versa... Love is the bread that calms the hunger of the Spirit.

Even animals need the casual companionship and the "caress"(caring for each other, play struggling, sleeping together to keep each other warm). There is a video here in Youtube of a male cat trying to "revive" his female companion, after she got hit by a car. This took place in a parking lot in Turkey. See it & then prove me wrong.
