Rare moment when Cornish mine chimneys are fired.Quite surreal watching smoke emit from the engine houses and to imagine this once was a thriving mining area, in fact the Great Flat Load was once the richest square mile on the planet. • Ahh yes, Fortescue's engine had the biggest of all pumps.

We missed the smoking chimneys by about a week.

Must have been tremendous to see it first hand.

  • I'm told it's Grenville United, Fortescue's winding and pumping engines:

  • Is that Wheal Grenville in the background

  • Fantastic!
