ODU Football Returns

After 49 years, football returns to Old Dominion University. Here are highlights from the first game held September 5, 2009 at SB Ballard Stadium, Foreman Field. The school spirit was obvious as students, alumni, and locals demonstrated a lot of excitement. ODU played Chowan College (NC) and won.

Good to see a new (or re-newed, in this case) football program with so much support already. I have a few friends who attend ODU and I've been checking out the stats from the football games each week. I'm glad you guys are doing so well in opening season! I wish I could attend at least a game or two, but I'm currently studying at Penn State, so it's kind of tough to attend an ODU game in person, haha.

The pre-game activities are just as big as the game. Before football games, fans gather by the thousands to cook, drink beer, play cornhole and socialize. One everyone is good a fired up, the head in for the game. Every team has a mascot and "Big Blue" the Monarch has been around for awhile since he probably has been at ODU basketball games. Not being a big basketball fan myself, I can't say for sure. Oh yeah, that's not a rugby football although they do have similarities.

You play football with a rugby ball, lol. Something I don't get is why there are so many pre-match things (cheerleaders etc). Here they just start playing. I love your mascots though!
