A young male Anna's Hummingbird (Calypte anna) licks and wipes his bill just before chasing off an intruder. While "bill-wiping" can be utilitarian (cleaning the bill, etc.) in this case it is "displacement activity," sort of a nervous reaction to the chase about to come. Displacement activity is useful in that it often displaces actual aggression.
