This is an exercise I use with my students and percussion groups to teach note accuracy, speed, and intervals. It's called Chromatic Up and Down. It works very well for beginning, intermediate, or advanced students. Feel free to comment and use this warm up for yourself or your group. It works great for percussion ensembles and pits in marching band.

  • there's one that sounds like this but its playing in octaves and it goes up chromatically from C to G using both hands at a time. First time up, you go in sixes. back down, in five. up, 4. down 3 and so on.

  • Yeah, as you can see from the other comment, there are more than one of these kind of warmups around. That's because they are used to teach muscle memory. The idea is that by doing this warmup, your brain will remember what each interval feels like and how far your hands have to move to get there. That way, the next time you have that size of a jump in a new piece of music, your brain can use that memory to get there faster and without looking at the keys. Best of luck. Thanks for watching.

  • it's already been done it's called spatial awarness and it's crown and spirts pit audition packet. Faster pace i can do that whole thing with out the c check pattern in between. good try though

  • thanks. I wrote this one years ago. I added the check pattern because most of the high schools I have taught at needed it. I appreciate your critique, but please try to understand this warm up is meant for people who are not as talented as yourself - people still learning. thanks for checking out my video.

  • The Snare on the Sonor Kit is freaking me out. It's there one minute, and gone then next. WTF? Reno......

  • It's a magical snare. It comes and goes as it pleases. Or maybe I filmed on different days... No, it's a magical snare.

  • i play the almost the same except i play it at D and B

  • ahh what about the scale done half up, down, half up, down, all the way up, half down, up, half down, up, all the way down? repeated from 6 strokes per note to 1. bahh.

  • if your saying that spatial awareness was the first and only exercise that works on chromatic scales, well think again. and having just one exercise that works on chromatic scales that EVERY SINGLE front ensemble plays would be pretty boring. also for most high school pits spatial awareness would be pretty changeling, although it is a good exercise.
