You got one thing right. It isn't entirely Beyonce or rihanna's fault that they commidify their sexuality. It's the society that tells them that in order to be sex-cessful - see what I did there ;) - they need to sell themselves talent wise, and reduce themselves to sexually objectifying their bodies. Now, dont get me wrong. Wearing whatever you choose should not warrant slut-shaming. Infact, some women see it as a move of independence. But change needs to start, and Monae got the ball rolling!

Wow, I actually think I...agree with you. People probably are talking more about her being a role model than her music, and that's actually kind of annoying to me.

I don't think her music really works for sexy stuff though, so ir doesn't really matter. Thats generally only for top 40 radio overproduced electronic dance music.

The "ability to say NO" within the context of a patriarchal power structure that compromises the value of women's consent. That fact is sad, but I'm not going to throw other women who choose to commodify their sexuality under the bus for a cultural disease that just isn't their doing or fault. I also don't view it as particularly positive that something as simple as choosing to dress modestly comes *in spite of* huge music industry pressure to embrace and embody complete sexual objectification.
