The orig. animation of the Athena Precursor Experiment (APEX) 2001 Mars Surveyor Lander. Pulled from the web about a decade ago because of copyright issues with the music. Animation by the space-anim phenomenon that is Dan Maas.

The mission was cancelled 6 weeks before the instruments were delivered, in the wake of the twin 1999 Mars failures. The lander went on to be re-born with new instruments and no rover as the Phoenix lander that successfully landed on Mars in May 2008. The instruments ( Pancam, MiniTES, Mossbauer ) and a few other details ( the magnets, the sundial ) 'got wheels' and became the twin MER rovers that have been driving around Gusev Crater and Meridiani Planum since January 2004.

And the little rover? The spare of 'Sojourner' - the rover that landed with Pathfinder in 1997. The only part of APEX-2001 that never made it to Mars. Called Marie Curie, she now spends her time coming out to visit her big relatives at JPL from time to time!
