Less than 3h 30mins
Hmm, it's been awhile since I last tried 3D movie. Hee, I can say that 3D movies are a lot easier to draw than human portraits because the shape and the lightings are very straight forward and easy to read. As a result, I can better understand what I'm drawing.
I don't use grids or clone painting techniques, so I really need to quickly sketch out the character to determine the position of everything. After the quick sketch is out, I quickly put in blocks of colours to fill up the subject's space. Once that is done, I can slowly render the colours and bring out the 3D-ness in Bolt and Penny!
Eye-Balling (Or traditionaly painting techniques) painting requires patience and practice. What I observe from my past paintings is that, in the past I took much longer time to be able to "see" what I'm suppose to draw. Sometimes I can't even "see" what I'm suppose to draw, and that's a super time-waster. For myself, I'm not a really patience guy to begin with, hence I usually don't work on the painting for more than 4 hours. Usually I'll stop at 3hours and start to lose the motivation after that. (Or rather, I'll persuade myself to put this painting project to an end! Reason is actually pretty simple, to rest and to begin another project as soon as possible.) Well, I don't have much time to paint as I am a full time worker, so that's how I plan it to be.
Just to stress again, the time that I indicate is the recorded time for painting only. This excludes the washroom time, games break in between or facebooking, etc. Ample time of rest in between, I believe, would give my mind a more efficient ground to work on my painting. (Able to "see" is very important to me! That requires a clear mind!)
I hope I can come up with interesting lessons in future to teach people digital paintings. Right now I'm only at the learning-to-paint stage. Hee, there's still a long way to go. (But an enjoyable one :D)
Oh yes, I've recently bought the new Corel Painter 12!!! I'm Lovin' IT!!!! :D :D :D

hi there why when u applying the shadow layer.. it seems so smooth but i cant do so with digital airbrush.. did u use any other variant??

@KianHuiTan
Nope, I just use Digital Airbrush
My Techniques:
1) Use 10% Opacity (Pressure sensitivity of Stylus must be On)
2) Colour pick the neighbouring colour after I've applied a stroke of another colour. (Eyedropping the variety of colours when two colours mix together -- Beauty of Air Brush)

Wow, glad you're so eager to learn. I hope i can set up school for this. To answer you:
1) I didn't use dodge. I just colour pick the colours near the area and apply the brushstrokes. This would give the illusion of smoothness. If you really want to be very smooth, an easier approach is to use the "Just Add Water" from one of the blenders in Painter 12
2) Yes, I do erase the lines. In fact, I do erase a lot :)
