After five weeks of veterinary treatment and animal care at the Vancouver Aquarium Marine Mammal Rescue Centre, Flash Gordon, the California sea lion that was rescued off Vancouver Island on August 23, 2011, returned home on October 5, 2011.

The young adult male California sea lion had been spotted by locals with a 30 cm fishing flasher hanging from his left cheek. The Vancouver Aquarium's Marine Mammal Rescue Centre was called to make the rescue off the shore of Ucluelet, and with the help of Fisheries and Oceans Canada, he was brought to the Rescue Centre. After a series of diagnostic testing, a hook was located in his esophagus at the level of the heart and was successfully removed on August 25. While healing and recovering at the Rescue Centre, he gained more than 50 kilos and ate 15 kilos of fish daily.
