Some onroad driving in the Mojave Desert. Starting in Daggett, driving along National Trails Hwy (aka Route 66), to Kelbaker Rd.

Kelbaker Rd. into Baker (ending at the world's tallest thermometer).

All sped up quite a bit.

The Orb's Outlands, in the background.

  • Normally I'd say you are absolutely right, but on that day (July 12th,I think) the temps were above 110 degrees, so not the best hiking weather.

I made the mistake of hitting Kelso Dunes that afternoon without taking any water with me, and nearly passed out. Even if I had brought adequate water, would have been a grueling hike in the temps that day.

  • I sped up the video by about 4 or 5 times, don't remember exactly. Wasn't speeding excessively in this stretch, probably doing 60-70mph through most of it, this portion of Route 66 isn't well maintained and is pretty rough.

  • the kelbaker road is awesome, great place to speed haha, but yea plenty of places to hike, if the season is right. summer? nahh. man Kelso dunes witout water? wow that must feel like the sahara

  • nice :)

  • hahahaha i live in that junky baker ca town trust me it is the worst place to live only 750 people, 130 degrees, trashy old thermometer, boring!!

  • Sometimes, when I drive across the desert in the middle of the night, with no other cars around, I start imagining: What if there were no civilization out there? No cities, no factories, no people? And then I think: No people or factories? Then who made this car? And this highway? And I get so confused I have to stick my head out the window into the driving rain---unless there's lightning, because I could get struck on the head by a bolt.

  • Is that the Bun Boy restaurant you parked at?

  • that's how it is in the southwest

  • Beginning about 03:22, that black mass across the horizon is the north end of the Pisgah lava flow. You are on the Old Route 66 traveling eastward.

Then you got back on I-40, exited at Kelbaker Rd, driving north thru Mojave Nat. Preserve (Granite Mts left; Providence Mts right), across the tracks near Kelso, up past the Cinder Cones, ending at Baker, CA (@I-15). Nice video, but you should get out of your car sometimes. You passed about 500 places that are interesting to hike.

  • i want to know how far and how long it really took. naybe a good question would be how fast did they drive?
