The Bridgeport Bulls celebrated a 21-0 shut out over the Breckenridge Buckaroos to start the regular season on Friday night.
Although the Bulls scored on their first two possessions, the defense ultimately carried the team to an easy win. The Buckaroos failed to cross the 50 yard line for the entire first half. They only managed to cross the 50 in the second half due to turnovers by the Bulls' offense.
An athletic secondary and a dominating defensive front led by the big senior end Daniel Scott effectively halted any aerial attack by the Buckaroos.
Scott made three tackles for a loss in the first half, including two sacks for big losses. Scott exploded off the end during Breckenridge's first possession and sacked senior quarterback David Howard for 10 yards. He hit Howard again towards the end of the second quarter for a nine yard loss.
Overall, the Bull defense held Howard to only 37 passing yards on 16 attempts. Junior defensive back Kevin Coan intercepted a pass by Howard in the end zone to prevent any chance of scoring.
Meanwhile, Bridgeport's junior quarterback Cody Henson put up some impresive numbers. He completed 22 or 33 passes for 208 yards and two passing touchdowns. He was also the teams leading rusher with 57 yards on eight attempts.
Senior Jordan Daniel emerged in the opener as Henson's go to receiver. He caught 10 passes for 79 yards and two receiving touchdown. He also racked up 24 yards rushing.
However, Bridgeport lost the turnover battle. Henson threw one interception and he committed one fumble recovered by Breckenridge senior defensive back Lance Robertson. Sophomore runningback Trent Schuett also coughed up a fumble. It was recovered by Breckenridge's junior offensive lineman Braxton Diaz.
Also, besides a few decent runs by Henson, the Bulls failed to move the ball effectively on the ground. Four other runners only accumulated 62 yards throughout the game.
Bridgeport scored in the first quarter on a five yard touchdown pass from Henson to Daniel. Early in the second, senior Blake Waldrep bullied forward on a two-yard touchdown run. Late in the third, Daniel's soft hands again proved to be a threat as he caught a seven yard touchdown pass from Henson.
The football game provided a glimmer of light for a school and town that was clouded by tragedy after the death of Bridgeport High School senior and varsity cheerleader Leslie Denison on Tuesday.
A moment of silence was held prior to the game for Denison. The cheerleaders wore shirts reading "In loving memory of Leslie Denison." Almost the entire Bridgeport side wore green ribbons in honor of Denison. Denison's mom also recieved roses from the cheerleaders.
