Actually, it was always going to be Santos. When Vinicks char started gaining popularity among viewers, they rewrote the drama to make it much closer.

@johnskudris - Actually, it was planned orginally that Vinick should have won, but when John Spencer (Leo) died, they changed the script

@PeterFormaini More like a Republican with a functioning brain and a sense of personal integrity.
To paraphrase Toby, it's more like science fiction.

@johnskudris I agree. I was never really impressed with Santos. It seemed he was letting Josh control his actions to much, and that Santos was being molded into Jed Barlet number 2 by Josh. Josh seemed to believe the goal of the White House was to twist it's policy to help his guy, even to the point he acts smugger then usual (is that a word and is that possible) when "asking" the WH to put a mutlimillion $ science lab in Texas. Vinick was his own man and way more entertaining.

@Bluecoat93 the original idea was for Santos to win, but Alda did such a fantastic job as Vinick, that they very nearly did give him the election.

A Republican that will actually think for himself and actually cares about doing the right thing for the public. Yeah, this is fiction.

Any chance you can upload his Campaign Announcement speech from 'In The Room'? That part of my DVD is scratched and its the one clip I really enjoyed more than any other of his.
Thanks either way for this.

Vinick was originally supposed to win the campaign. If John Spencer hadn't died, he would have.
@johnskudris An extremely intelligent and sometimes bipartisan Republican.
Of COURSE he was fictional.

I'm a Democrat. But, Arnold Vinick should have won. What an amazing (fictional) candidate.
