Water Feature Designs and be tranquil and can serve as a welcoming oasis offering movement and a bold splash of color in contrast to a background of grasses, shrubs, and trees. Ponder the variety of pools, fountains and waterfalls and ask yourself, what kind of Water Feature do I want in my garden.

While Planning for your water feature keep in mind that it is only one of the components of your garden. Perhaps you want the feature to be a dominant feature, around which you redesign the landscape. You also might only desire a modest water feature for an otherwise established environment.

Once you have decided on the style of your Water Feature Design, consider whether you want to add plants or fish...or if you would just like a free-standing fountain. Aside from the beauty and interest plants and fish add to your garden, they also play an important role in maintaining an ecological balance.

As an example, fish help solve the algae problem by feeding on it. As an added bonus, they also devour insect larvae, thus minimizing the possibility of a mosquito problem around you Water Feature.

Plants also play an important role. Algae thrive on sunlight so it is wise not to deprive you Water Feature Design of it. To strike a good balance, plants should cover less than 50 percent of the surface of the water when sharing the area with fish.

Size and Shape

Your budget and your design will influence the size and shape of your Water Feature, but aesthetics and maintenance should be a part of your planning as well. Larger pools require more work and expense up front, but they can provide more enjoyment and require less upkeep over time. Try to look at a Water Feature Design that has already been installed to get a mental picture of how large a feature your site can accommodate. If your visions are larger than your budget, it is perfectly acceptable to build your feature in stages. Draw up your plans, then build the first stage using a flexible systems that will allow you to attach additional sections of liners to the existing one.

Lighting

Low-voltage systems are available with many types of lights and fixtures. Some can be placed on the ground, others can be hung from trees, set under the water or attached to the house. Submersible lights are also available with colored bulb covers which can be easily changed to alter the look of your Water Feature Design.
