Third movement of "Piano Trio in D minor", which Kochel listed as K 442. This trio is a composite work, made up of three unrelated movements (respectively 55, 151, and 133 bars long. The first "movement" appears to be in D minor, while the second and third are in D Major). When Mozart's widow Constanze found them among the mass of his unpublished scores, she asked Maximilian Stadler to complete the music, and he did so, filling up blank pages in each autograph in a routine way. Constanze had the resultant "trio" published in 1797. Though dates of the movements have been much debated, this Allegro in D (major) is now generally dated, both from handwriting and musical style, to the summer of 1788 or even later. The quality of this "finale" is definitely above average, especially when compared to the the first two parts of K442. This Allegro, as far as it goes, is Mozart at his best: fiery, inventive, and in the grand manner.

Musicians: Menahem Pressler, piano; Isidore Cohen, violin; Bernard Greenhouse, cello. (This is the Beaux Arts Trio).

Recorded in May 1987, in Switzerland.

  • @sirwolfit ... Sounds more like a finale to a piano trio to me. It kind of has a rondo theme going on. Very good indeed. The piano part is amazing!

  • The music strongly suggests Mozart intended this to be a first movement of a piano trio had he completed it.

  • Danke, habe Link gesetzt
