Opossum, Lunch with Marci

Marci is a Virginia opossum who was half starved, very sick, and suffering from "crispy ear" or Dermal Septic Necrosis. She was treated with antibiotics and recovered well, but not before losing half of her tail, and the tops of her ears.

Oh my gosh, her front paws are just like hands. I can't believe it. Her eyes are so gentle looking.

yes front and back feet are as soft as a new born baby, and her back feet have little thumbs like a monkey. Many people think they dig up their lawns, but their hands and nails are too fragile to do much digging.

Oh, and her eyes don't lie.

Last year I picked up a dead possum from the road and removed 9 live babies from her pouch, who I took to an animal rehabber, 5 lived and were released. This year I found an injured one on the road, I took her to the same rehabber, she died, but her 10 babies all lived. So,if you see a freshly hit opossom stop and check her, you may save a lot of Opossoms.

If you knew anything about Opossums, you'd know how silly you sound. You're knowledge comes from stereotypes. They're the most misunderstood animals on earth, every animal including man is a scavenger to some degree. They scavenge because of their gentle nature and inability to kill most things bigger than a bug, including birds. They're the most defenseless animal. She wasn't turned into a house pet, she was very sick, and would have died from DSN and other problems if I hadn't treated her.

I love seeing opossums with people. They look like they have the most ferocious bite you could imagine, but are probably the most docile thing you'll ever see. Makes me want to meet one in person. :)

Opossums have to be on a strict low fat diet to live long healthy lives. They require lots of calcium. I have 4 opossums that I'm raising. They really love yogurt, and a mixture of: oats, honey, egg, powdered milk, and water.
